SPIDER-MAN ANIMATION BREAKDOWN

I have been making some GREAT progress lately with my upcoming Spider-Man animated short. Here I wanted to push my shot direction in a more dynamic way with this particular fight scene. It was challenging because I don't usually draw the human form in such positions and from such weird angles.

Scene Breakdown 

Final Composition

Here is the final composition of the scene. I added in some snow to give the setting some atmosphere. Other additions include motion blur around the characters movements, color correction to make the scene pop, and film grain to give it a traditional animation feel.

Rough

This is the rough animation of the scene. In this phase, I scribble and animate quickly to get the movement to feel right. Movement and timing are crucial to animation, this comes first and art quality comes second. 

Tie Down

Here I outline the scribbly lines and draw them closer to how the final outline will look. I tidey up the drawings and try as much as possible to keep the characters proportions on model. I also added camera movement here to give some impact to the animation

Color

With a steady hand I outline each frame with a black line to try and make the art look nice and clean. I also go through and color each frame, making sure the shadows move aproprietley with the body movement. 

BG

Here I add the background, I make sure to try and have the background make sense in space. I also tend to try and draw it in a way to make the composition interesting, with a balance of negative space and complementory colors.

Up top is some progress pics to show my process. Although the snow scene is the final composition, I might go in and add more frames for smoother animation later on. Down below is some extra stuff from the scene.

Extras

Background

Here is a look at the background I drew for the scene. It takes place on a NY rooftop, the reason it looks unfinished around the edges is because I only drew what the camera would see. 

Venom Animation

A closer look at venoms attack animation. The drawings are rough because I knew the audience would only see it for a single second before his body is covered. It is important to save time and energy when working solo on a project, especially when it comes to animation!

Next in Line

Next Shot

The next shot I am working on, I tried to stay true to the characters when choreographing the scene. Spider-Man is quick and agile as well as flexible, he leaps around and spins a lot, this is something I wanted to emphasize in his movement. 

Swing Test

A scene that happens earlier in the short, it is still a work in progress. I wanted the physics of web swinging to make sense, getting the pendulum movement can be tricky. Hopefully, it will feel a lot more alive with the background and buildings added in.
